They are the result of damaged valves in veins, causing them to become dilated. They may appear raised and lumpy, and may be blueish or purple in colour
Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels lying just beneath the skin surface.
Fortunately most varicose and spider veins are relatively harmless. Modern treatments have also improved.
“In general varicose veins worsen with time so it is preferable to have them treated before complications arise,” Dr Naomi Hunter, from Hunter Vein Clinic said.
“Tired, aching legs are the most common early symptoms, particularly after prolonged standing. Cosmetic concerns are also very common. In more severe cases, fluid may accumulate in the feet and ankles leading to swelling and the skin may become discoloured, hard, dry and itchy.
“Rarely these changes may progress to develop pigmentation, bleeding points and ulceration. Thrombosis (blood clotting) may occur in varicose veins.”

Hunter Vein Clinic is a medical practice specialising in the treatment of venous disorders ranging from varicose and spider veins to severe venous problems.
Dr Hunter is a fellow of the Australasian College of Phlebology and has been a specialist in the treatment of varicose veins since 1989.
“Assessment of patients with varicose veins and venous disorders requires a specialised venous Doppler ultrasound scan or "Venous Reflux Examination” to accurately document the deep and superficial venous system and define precise abnormalities,” Dr Hunter said.
“Hunter Vein Clinic partners with Vascular HealthCare’s highly trained vascular sonographers, who can perform these scans and provide the required information and detail under the supervision of specialist vascular surgeons.”
While a doctor's referral is required for an ultrasound scan, no referral is necessary to see Dr Hunter. For patients wishing to choose this route, Dr Hunter can arrange all required scanning.
Hunter Vein Clinic has offices in East Maitland and Toronto. For more information, ring 02 4933 0431, email info@hunterveinclinic.com.au or visit www.hunterveinclinic.com.au.
