A 1987 bio-mechanic youth research project supported by the NSW government and the University of Newcastle turned out to be the main catalyst for the start of Hunter Academy of Sport (HAS).

Since that time, over 20,000 of the region’s talented youth have been supported in over 30 different sporting codes.
Today, HAS is part of the Regional Academy of Sport network, whose main objective is to identify regional talent, educate and develop, and provide opportunities into established pathways.
Vital partnerships with the NSW Office of Sport and many sporting organisations ensure that the state’s academy system is strong and relevant, while locally programs provide regional youth with the support and guidance they need to become better members of their community.
The Academy has developed many athletes, including the likes of netballer Samantha Poolman, Paralympian Erin Cleaver, world champion Ty Swadling and Olympian Brendan Sexton.
