SOME may believe that dental braces and extreme sports don’t mix, but champion Newcastle cliff diver Rhiannan Iffland would disagree.

Born in Newcastle, 26-year-old Rhiannan has plunged into the extreme sport of cliff diving and recently won the second leg of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2018.

Such was her schedule she believed that getting her smile straightened was impossible. But a visit to Profilo Dental in April and an outline of their new Dental Monitoring service provided the perfect solution.

Rhiannan’s journey makes for a great story.

“I have always been a diver; I started with trampolining and diving at Lambton Pool in Newcastle. I trained for years in Sydney and then I started working on cruise ships in their diving shows. That’s how I got into high diving,” Rhiannan said.

“Whilst on the ship I saw some guys doing the 17 metre dive and I wanted to do it too, so I started training. Today I work in a theme park in France in summer and they have a diving ladder that is 24m tall.”

Whilst attending a Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series event as a spectator, Rhiannan was asked to dive. Now she is making history, having just broken her personal record and performed the hardest dive in women’s cliff diving – the back, triple somersault with two twists.

While she was making a splash in extreme sports on a global level, Rhiannan wanted to focus on straightening her teeth and smile. She came into the Newcastle Profilo clinic in April this year to speak to Dr Evan Stacey about her options.

“I went into Profilo and found out about Invisalign braces.

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go ahead with them because I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to attend the clinic regularly, as I travel a lot for six months of the year to compete. After leaving the clinic, I was 100 per cent sure Invisalign was for me,” Rhiannan said.

Invisalign is a sophisticated alternative to traditional metal braces. It is a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth and smile and, importantly for Rhiannan, it doesn’t stop you from doing the things you love – no matter how extreme.

“You can’t see my braces unless you are up really close. A lot of people don’t even notice that I have them. I leave them in 22 hours a day, even during the five hours of the day that I am diving,” she said.

With Rhiannan competing around the world in places like Switzerland, Bosnia and Portugal for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series later this year and training overseas for six months of each year, she needed an approach that allowed her to keep on top of her dental needs while on the road.

“I was worried I would have to stay in one place during the treatment, but Dr Stacey was really understanding of my situation.

“In fact, he said he had worked with others in a similar position. The Dental Monitoring app has been an amazing tool that has allowed them to track my progress. All I do is take a weekly photo of my teeth and send it to my dentist.

“They evaluate how my teeth are going and either organise a chat, make a recommendation or simply touch base to make sure everything is going OK,” Rhiannan said.

Dental Monitoring lets you and your dentist remotely control your treatment, alerting your doctor of changing conditions as they occur and making sure you continue to see results, no matter where you are.

“The Invisalign braces are comfortable to wear and I could see a noticeable difference to my teeth after just two months,” she said.
