“But once someone suggested Stockton, that was it,” teacher Jane Boyd said.
“We’ve actually had to eliminate characters and ideas because we had so many bouncing off each other.”
The school’s year six class of 13 students helped write – and are the stars of – Save Stockton Beach: The Musical, which will be performed at 11.30am and 6pm on September 25 and 26.
The production advocates for the construction of an artificial reef.
Its storyline follows a family concerned about the coastal erosion as they meet characters including a lifeguard, teacher, the IGA manager, a cat lady, seal, shark and government representative to discuss what they can do to help.
“As they learn they become more passionate about the issue and realise they can do something – they’re not powerless,” Ms Boyd said.
Students Emmerson Williams and Grace Sutton said they hoped the production would spread awareness of the problem.
“It makes me concerned,” Emmerson said.
“We’re just kids, what can we do about it? We’re not adults. But we try our best.
“Everyone has a role to play. Don’t stand back, do something about it.”
Grace, who said it was “hurtful” the daycare centre was falling into the sea and has helped collect signatures for the petition, said she wanted people to “open their hearts and minds” about solutions.
The production features other grades singing Riptide, The Love Cats, Under the Sea, Fight Song, Respect, Revolting Children and A Million Dreams.
Tickets: 4928 1861.
