Bushfire investigators are examining whether an untended camp fire caused last weekend’s inferno on the Tilligery Peninsula.
A Rural Fire Service spokesman said on Wednesday night that the investigation was looking at a variety of possible causes of the fire, including a camp fire.
He said a preliminary inquiry could be completed this week.
The rare winter fire scorched more than 2040 hectares of bush in the Tilligerry State Conservation Area from Friday to Sunday and forced residents to flee their houses.
Salt Ash, Oyster Cove, Tanilba Bay and Mallabula were the areas worst affected.
