The death toll from a series of powerful earthquakes that hit Indonesia's Lombok island this month has risen to 555, the country's disaster management agency says.

Nearly 400,000 were still in temporary shelters after about 77,000 homes were damaged in the quakes, agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said on Friday.
The government had earlier estimated economic losses at 7.45 trillion rupiah ($A694 million), but the amount is expected to increase as assessment of the impact of the disaster continues.
A 6.9-magnitude quake struck on August 5, a week after a slightly weaker tremor caused 20 deaths on Lombok. Two strong temblors followed two weeks later, killing more people and damaging more homes.
Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
