Once a working class, mining village, Merewether is now blue chip real estate and has become arguably the region’s most sought-after residential suburb.

It is located approximately three kilometres from Newcastle’s CBD and is bordered by pristine beaches, Bar Beach, The Junction, Adamstown and Merewether Heights.

According to Australian Property Monitors, Merewether experienced market growth of around 20 per cent in 2016 and 2017. 

Locals have always known how good Merewether beach is and this year it had the honour of being named “best city beach” in Australia.

Highly regarded schools, proximity to The Junction Shopping Village, cafes, restaurants and bars makes this laid-back suburb popular.

Merewether includes some of Newcastle’s most famous beaches, including Dixon Park beach, Merewether beach and the more isolated Burwood beach, which leads to Glenrock Lagoon.

It also features the iconic Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere, Merewether Surf Life Saving Club, the Hunter’s oldest lifesaving club, and the Merewether Surfboard Club, the most successful board riders club in Australia.

The suburb is also home to four-time world champion Mark Richards, one of several world-class surfers to have honed their skills at the Merewether break.

Merewether, once serviced by tramways to the city and today by buses, has excellent road connections to all sections of Newcastle.

Its oldest mansion is Hillcrest, originally home to the Merewether family.
