On Sunday the surf-rock three-piece will perform their biggest ever show when they support Wollongong band Hockey Dad at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre.
The opportunity is a dream come true for 16-year-old Milky Thred guitarist and vocalist Riley Gardiner, who first forged a relationship with Hockey Dad two years ago when his father contacted the band and asked if his son could meet them before their over-18 show at Newcastle’s Small Ballroom.
“A year later they did a record shop show at The Edwards and I saw them again and had a chat and hit them up [for a support slot] when they released the tour and they said yeah,” Gardiner said.
Milky Thred, which includes fellow Whitebridge High year 10 student Bronte Jenness (16) on bass and Adrian Smith (18) on drums, will also have a new single to perform at the Enmore Theatre.
The track Awkward was released on Thursday and sees Milky Thred extend their influences beyond surf rock.
Gardiner said the song is inspired by various unpleasant experiences at parties.
“It’s about being in a social situation where you don’t really feel comfortable and you want to zone out, not listen to what they’re saying and do your own thing,” he said.
The single follows their previous releases I’m Better, Day Dreamin and Love You Everyday, which have made Milky Thred one of Newcastle’s most popular under-age bands.
Last Saturday Milky Thred also made their Sydney debut, performing at Newtown’s Hideaway Bar on the opening night of their Awkward tour. Milky Thred bring the tour home to the Small Ballroom on October 5 for an all-ages show.
NOISY START
GROWING up in a country town can be depressing if you’re seriously into music. Muswellbrook Shire Council is trying to encourage a cultural change by launching the Noisy Heeler music festival on October 20.
Hockey Dad, Gooch Palms, Waax, Little Quirks Band, Pat Capocci, Bootleg Rascal and Downsyde feature at the festival, which will be held in the centrally-located Simpson Park in Muswellbrook.
Buses will be available to transport festival-goers from Newcastle, Maitland and Singleton.
NEW BROODS
THIS That music festival completed its line-up this week by announcing Kiwi electronic duo Broods to headline The Other stage.
Joining the Nott siblings are Adelaide artist Allday and producers Jesse Porsches, Ebony Boadu, Barney Cools DJs, Purple Sneakers DJs, Sports and Lex Deluxe.
These latest announcements join RL Grime, The Rubens, Amy Shark, Safia, Boo Seeka and more at the November 3 festival, scheduled for Wickham Park.
FOMO LINE-UP
MAITLAND producer Jacob Grant, aka Just A Gent, will share the stage with US rap superstar Nikki Minaj this summer after being announced for the FOMO Festival.
Minaj is the 19th most popular artist in the world on Spotify, commanding an audience of 33 million monthly listeners.
FOMO rolls into Parramatta Park on January 12.
