The public is being warned of a scam reporting to be from the Australian Tax Office which is threatening victims with five years jail.
Some people have reported receiving automated messages from both Canberra and Melbourne-originated numbers warning them of an outgoing tax debt and if they did not pay back immediately they would be arrested.
A police spokesperson said the caller directs them attend their bank and withdraw the owed money, then deposit it in a specific ATM as directed.
