THE BIG STAGE: The Newcastle MBA Awards are the focal point for recognition for local building and construction companies.

The Master Builders Excellence in Building Awards will be held tonight at the NEX, Newcastle West.

The regions encompassing the Central Coast, Hunter and Mid North Coast have experienced significant economic and population growth for the past two years.

As a result there has been a significant upturn in building activity.

The MBA Awards seek to recognise the prestigious and iconic buildings constructed over the period.

Leading builders, contractors and apprentices have nominated their projects and skills in a wide range of residential and commercial building categories. A total of the 173 entries worth over $689 million in value are  entered. This represents the most entries and greatest value of building work in the 24-year history of the awards.

Experienced and independent judges had the difficult task of selecting the best of the best from the entrants and commented on the improvements made each year with new and innovative building designs, products and finishes.

The Awards aim to encourage, promote and recognise “Best Practice” in building.

Both entrants and winners aim to establish a quality standard of work guaranteed to promote public confidence in the construction industry.

The projects entered in the awards demonstrated highly professional building skills for both contractors and builders. With record low interest rates, all the regional areas covered by the awards show no signs of reduced construction activity.

Business prospects look highly promising for local builders, contractors and apprentices who are skilled and customer focused.

The number of knock down and rebuilding projects within inner city suburbs is still increasing along with a very healthy level of renovation activity.

This is backed up by recent Australian Bureau of Statistics building approval figures for the year ended June 2018.

The  4937 housing and apartment approvals for the Hunter region represent a strong 17% increase over approvals for 2017.

Over $172 million worth of alterations were approved in the Hunter and total building approvals exceeded $2.5 billion, an increase of 10% over the previous year.

The number of commercial entries showed a strong increase over 2017 and displayed exceptional standards in both design and finishes.

Hunter residents will recognize many of the builders and their newly completed projects within the region including North Construction – Hunter Valley Grammar School TAS building, Collaborative Constructions – Hunter United GreenHills, Hansen Yuncken – UoN NeW Space, PDA Building – One Mile Life Guard Facility, GWH Build – Aero Apartments, Graph Builders – Maitland Riverlink.

The commercial building awards include Public Buildings, Extensions and Renovations, Interior Fit-out, Civil Engineering and Commercial Projects. In addition the Master Builders will reward the Commercial Apprentice, Commercial Subcontractor and University Construction Graduate of the Year.

The residential awards attract a great deal of attention and exhibit superior build quality, exciting new products and a greater focus on sustainability and energy/water efficiency.

Well known local builders include McDonald Jones, Mavid Construction, N& B Russell Building, Sehez Group and Mojo Homes.

Residential awards cover Alterations, Custom Built Homes, Medium Density, Display Homes, Kitchens and Bathrooms.

The judges faced some hard decisions in selecting the Housing Apprentice of the Year, SafeWork WHS Award winner for Small Business Housing Builder, Housing Subcontractor and Women in Building award winners.

Again the quality and skills of all the entrants was excellent.

Master Builders congratulates all the entrants for their projects and for participating in an industry which provides valuable employment and business opportunities.

The Hunter Region and our communities are well served by the many skilled and talented business owners and their staff who work in the building industry.

A special thanks to Master Builders Apprentices who currently employ and mentor 180 highly skilled young people and have been in operation for 19 years.

In addition the support and sponsorship from Hunter TAFE is greatly appreciated along with the excellent training they provide to the region’s construction apprentices.

We trust the Master Builders Excellence in Building Awards demonstrates the skills and professionalism of our local building contractors. Our region’s award winners will again feature strongly in the MBA’s National Awards to be held in November.
