ONE young artist will receive the opportunity of a lifetime when the 2018 Brenda Clouten Travelling Memorial Scholarship is awarded on Saturday.
The announcement will be made at Maitland Regional Art Gallery at 3pm.
“Spring is synonymous with hope, youthful energy and a fresh start,” gallery director Brigette Uren said.
“We are excited to be presenting the Brenda Clouten Memorial scholarship again this year.
“We have had some amazing entrants in the past, and the exhibition of the finalists’ work is something I always look forward to.”
The scholarship is open to secondary and tertiary students under the age of 30 from the Lower Hunter. It is awarded on the basis of artistic merit and potential, designed to help the recipient to undertake a program of professional development in an international context.
“Travelling and international exposure not only help create future opportunities, these experiences can dramatically expand or transform a young artist’s practice,” Ms Uren said.
The scholarship was founded by former Deputy Mayor of Maitland Vicki Woods and her husband Bruce.
Now in its 14th year the scholarship has highlighted some amazing young artists, all of whom have gone on to carve out successful careers in their chosen fields.
“We feel very honoured to have helped them realise their dreams,” Mr and Mrs Wood said.
