THE author of a book about the murder that shocked a nation will speak at a University of Newcastle event on Monday focusing on violence against women as part of Social Science Week.
Crime author and journalist Mark Morri will talk about his 2016 book, Remembering Anita Cobby, and how her rape and murder in 1986 involving five men put the spotlight on the high rate of violent crimes against women in Australia.
More than three decades later Mr Morri and speakers from Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) and Survivors R Us will ask whether much has changed, and what is needed to reduce the rate of violent crimes against women.
The university’s Criminology and Criminal Justice Association is hosting the event at Callaghan Campus, RW149, from 6pm on Monday, September 10.
Speakers will take audience questions and highlight how their professions impact their day-to-day lives.
The Q & A forum event, which is open to the public, is aimed at engaging students, staff and the public with the highly topical subject of crimes against women and how social sciences can help inform public debate.
