Just after 5pm Sunday a man entered a liquor store on Hunter Street, and threatened a male staff member with a knife.
The offender fled with a bottle of alcohol. No one was physically injured.
Officers from Newcastle Police District attended and established a crime scene.
Just before 5.30pm, officers arrested a 21-year-old man at a bus stop on King Street.
After a search of his backpack, officers seized a bottle of alcohol, a knife, and a stolen credit card.
The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon, steal from person, and carry cutting weapon upon apprehension.
He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
