An exciting new attraction hatched at Blackbutt earlier this month when City of Newcastle opened an Adventure Playground at Richley Reserve, the previously under-utilised side of the bushland jewel. Featuring natural, tactile materials, such as timber, smooth river stones and a sandpit, the playground gives toddlers to young teens an array of fun challenges and decision-making exercises in a shady setting.
Spaces for play with rocks and sticks, a ropes course, swings and tower complete with bridges, slide and fireman poles are all part of the 60m-long playground, while a specially designed carousel puts kids with wheelchairs at the centre of the fun.
"This playground let's kids of all ages and abilities get dirty, play hard and enjoy the outdoors, all in a way that is controlled and safe. It has been open for two weeks now and it is already the go-to play space for Newcastle families.” Said Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes.
Richley Reserve's $2.5million overhaul also includes accessible footpaths, new shelters, BBQ areas and green space.
Importantly, City of Newcastle engaged local companies to complete much of the design, fabrication and construction of the Adventure Playground, ensuring that local businesses and local workers were also able to benefit from this significant investment in our public amenity.
