Canberra golfer Matthew Millar has staved off second-round surges from Sydney’s Darren Beck and Pacific Dunes’ Jamie Hook to claim the Nelson Bay Pro-Am by a single stroke on Friday.
Millar shot a three-under 69 to equal his opening round from Thursday and finish six under (138) the overall 36-hole card.
However, Beck and Hook both went six-under 66 on Friday alone to move within striking distance of clinching the $23,000 tournament.
But it wasn’t enough to reel in last year’s Merewether Pro-Am champion Millar, with Beck (139) and Hook (140) finishing one and two shots back respectively.
Matthew Stieger (141) was fourth at three under while a second-round 67 saw Queensland’s Tim Hart move into equal fifth spot next to 2012 NSW Cup winner Benjamin Clementson (142).
Leigh McKechnie was tied 13th at three over after a second-round 74, sitting alongside Tuesday’s victor at Merewether Troy Moses (147).
Wednesday’s Muree Pro-Am winner Chris Wood (148) broke even on day two.
Nathan Green and Callan O’Reilly (150) were a further two strokes back at six over.
The $25,000 Lake Macquarie Pro-Am takes place at Belmont on Monday and Tuesday.
