The band formed about 18 months ago, after singer and guitarist Jamie Hay’s return to Newcastle after years living in Melbourne.
The line-up sees some of Newcastle’s most seasoned punk musicians come together. Hay is joined by Chris Buttery on guitar, Dale Townsend on bass, and the Hard On’s Murray Ruse is on drums.
Three members – Hay, Townsend and Ruse – were also in the legendary Newcastle punk act Conation.
Post Truth’s sound lies somewhere between hardcore punk and sludge metal. The band takes inspiration from the likes of His Hero is Gone, High on Fire, Cursed, and Old Man Gloom.
Post Truth puts a lot more into songwriting than in previous punk line-ups members have been in.
“I guess with years behind us, we just have the confidence to play it the way we want to play it,” Buttery said. “It’s thought about a lot more, when writing a song.
“Things are definitely more complex.”
Hay said the band gives more consideration and time to work up songs.
“How it sounds when you first take it to rehearsal, the songs sound completely different to how they end up,” he said.
“In Conation I would just go this is how it goes and that would be it.”
“We have become more critical of ourselves.”
Hay said the music focused on “the darker side of things”.
“Conation was more melodic, but it was a thing from the start that we wanted to do darker sounding stuff, ” Hay said.
“I just enjoy that music and wanted to have a crack at it.”
The themes of the tunes cover an array of confronting subjects.
“The lyrics tie into the sound of the music and deals with issues,” Hay said. “White Phosphorus Ghosts is written from the perspective of civilians who have endured war and where bombs are seen to be ghosts who torment their families. Kind of like a folklore story.
“Shroud is about the young Aboriginal boy Elijah Doughty who died after was intentionally run over by a man in WA and how white Australia doesn’t recognise the ongoing genocide of Aboriginal people.”
The band released its debut self titled recording digitally last year, have a listen on Bandcamp: posttruth.bandcamp.com/releases.
It pressed 200 copies to vinyl this year.
