Update 2.25pm:
Lifeguards have re-opened Newcastle Beach after a report of a three-metre shark spotted near the Bogey Hole.
A Newcastle City Council spokeswoman said lifeguards didn’t find a shark during the two hour search of waters near the beach and were satisfied that it was safe for the public to return to the water.
Earlier report:
Lifeguards have temporarily closed Newcastle Beach after a reported shark sighting on Wednesday morning.
A Newcastle City Council spokeswoman said a member of the public reported seeing a three-metre long shark heading north off the coast near the Bogey Hole just before midday.
Lifeguards are now searching the area with jet skis and a lookout has been established at the Bogey Hole.
No other beaches in the area have been closed.
The council spokeswoman said the beach would reopen around lunch time if the shark was not spotted and that clear water conditions meant lifeguards expected to complete the search quickly.
