Lake Macquarie City Council approved a development application on Monday night for a new two-storey block at Newcastle Waldorf School at Glendale.
The Reservoir Road school, which teaches based on the philosophy of Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner, will set up three classrooms across two levels, with each floor about 123 square metres.
In a report to councillors tabled at Monday’s meeting, council staff said the classrooms were to cater for the school’s existing student population and did not signal expansion plans.
The proposed 7.6m height of the building would outstrip the area’s limit by a little more than two metres, the report said, but the school already had two other buildings on the grounds where council previously made exceptions.
“The non-compliance with the maximum height control for the site is considered to be acceptable on merit having regard to the site’s existing built forms, and uses, and would not result in adverse amenity impacts,” the report said.
