THE debate around the use of the Opera House as advertising space to me is only a side issue. The real debate for me is the inexcusable treatment, lack of respect and bullying of Louise Herron by Alan Jones. The lack of comment on that by our political leaders is mind blowing. Does their deafening silence equal approval of his methods?

ON Sunday night, we rang a taxi to pick us up from the club. When it arrived I open the door and saw the meter was running. I asked the driver what is was all about, $10.90, and he said he got the flag when he was at Gateshead and he is allowed to start charging from that point. What is going on that people can be charged like that? I tried to put in a complaint online and it wouldn't let me send. I then tried to ring but the complaint number is only half visible, so this letter is my next choice. Something must be done. And no, we didn't get in that taxi.

PRIME Minister Morrison is putting the cart before the horse when he says he wants people to have choices in his defence of the subsidies for private schools. Australia rated at 38th of 41 high and middle income countries is embarrassing. Maybe he should concentrate on getting the overall standard up, before making it easy for mostly well-to-do families to have choices on which elite school to send their offspring.

DEAR me, Steve Barnett (Short Takes, 6/10). We’ve all heard of misdirection. A while ago, a friend out shopping ran into someone we knew when she was a child. I remembered some of her challenges and learning difficulties. The quiet pride this young lady had in the success she had made out of her life and in the job that made that possible still makes me smile. As guilty as anyone else, I haven’t used the term “checkout chick” since.

MEDIA has reported that the Nauruan government is halting Doctors Without Borders’ mental health services on Nauru (‘Fears for refugees on Nauru as mental health workers given marching orders’, Sydney Morning Herald, 8/10). Prime Minister Scott Morrison talks about acting with ‘compassion and fairness’, but seems disinterested about the ending of these services. Our government put the detainees there. Surely it has some responsibility for their access to effective mental health services, or doesn’t compassion extend to Nauru refugees and asylum seekers?

I AGREE with Bev O’Hara (Short Takes, 9/10). All radio announcers advising us to set our timepieces forward one hour are guilty. My Oxford Dictionary lists it as daylight saving too, not savings! Also, I'd like all of Aaron Buman's critics to tell us what they have done to improve the lives of those less fortunate.
