In the magical world of Harry Potter, quidditch is the number-one sport.
So it was only natural that Quidditch Australia’s State Shield should be played at Magic Park at Broadmeadow at the weekend.
But was there any connection between the selection of the venue and its name?
Unfortunately, no.
“It was just because it was one of the best fields in Newcastle, with a canteen and plenty of places for spectators to watch,” tournament director Eleonora Leopardi said.
And so, with broomsticks between their legs and Harry Potter in their hearts, more than 80 state representatives fought for glory.
By all accounts, moments of wizardry and magic were on display, although not quite in the same way as the famous films.
“It’s been incredibly high-level quidditch, with many hard-fought and extremely intense games. There were many close matches,” Ms Leopardi said.
NSW Bluetongues defeated Victoria Leadbeaters on Sunday in a three-match grand final series.
