LAKE Macquarie’s big weekend was 30,000 strong by Sunday, with thousands flocking to what has become the area’s largest festival.
Superboats swooped across the lake as part of the offshore championships, one of 12 events designed to draw the big numbers and inject an estimated $10 million into the local economy.
Clearer skies on Sunday helped bolster crowd numbers, which were dented slightly by showers on Saturday.
Mayor Kay Fraser said one of the new events, a food and wine festival in Speers Point Park, has earned its place within the larger event.
“The aim of the weekend was to provide something for everyone, and the suite of events on offer certainly delivered, Cr Fraser said.
“With Matt Hall Racing aerobatic displays overhead, the jet skis flying around the lake off Eleebana and the superboats reaching speeds of almost 200km/h there was action right across the weekend.”
Valentine superboat driver Darren Nicholson took out the weekend’s third and final race on Sunday.
