I THANK John Arnold (Short Takes 1/11) for fully supporting my right as a parent to choose schools that value religion. Some wouldn't support that right. As for funding by the taxpayer, I remind him that "the taxpayer" includes religious school parents.

A LOT has been reported about the killing of a journalist in the Saudi Embassy in Turkey by a Saudi hit squad (‘Riyadh responsible: fiancee’, Herald 31/10). There is no doubt the world is and should be horrified at this event. But should we be surprised when this is a country that conducts regular public beheadings and amputations and floggings in city squares?

BEING referred to as a dinosaur (Short Takes 29/10) is a privilege. Dinosaurs roamed the earth for millions of years without any dramas other than where their next meal was coming from. I can't see the gay climate change activists replicating the dinosaurs, however they do seem to be able to survive on extreme carbon emissions, rising sea levels, extreme temperatures, cafe lattes, smashed avocado, lettuce leaves and a mobile phone. Oh, and government handouts. So just maybe I could be wrong.

READING Robert Dillon’s article regarding Lake Macquarie’s announcement of their intention to set aside land for a proposed basketball stadium (‘Zone defence’, Herald 26/10), it seems that while Newcastle council was justifying Supercars and a skate park on the sand at Newcastle South, clever Lake Macquarie Council snuck in to deal with the manager of Newcastle Basketball and has scored. It appears that Newcastle’s lord mayor is not happy, accusing Lake Macquarie’s mayor Kay Fraser of lack of consultation with residents, which I believe to be hypocritical. It’s not all that far to drive out to Hillsborough, but then it wasn’t Cr Nelmes’ idea.

POOR fillies (‘It’s time we stopped calling women ‘fillies’’, Opinion 31/10). If you think they get it bad, my filly calls me a stallion so I refuse to go to the races and I'm proud of that. Stop being so bloody PC and serious about everything. You are destroying culture and creating cults.
