Newcastle City Council workers and residents have been collecting asbestos off the beach for months.
Council’s environment asset program coordinator Karenne Jurd said it was unknown where the asbestos – that appears to have stopped washing ashore - came from.
She said a consultant believed the source could be “off shore”.
Residents feared it was from an old rubbish tip exposed by erosion earlier this year.
Asbestos pieces collected by residents ranged in size from 40 centimetres in length to the size of a 50 cent coin.
