AUSTRALIA has the race that stops a nation, and America has a president that stops a race. God bless America and Cliffy Rabbit, who tipped me Cross Counter in the Cup. Giddy up, Cliffy. No charge for your ham this Christmas, pal.

OF COURSE you are right Ronald Piper (short takes 6/11), he should have referred to them as "ankle biters"! Seriously the professionally outraged can whinge about the most innocuous remark.
Greg Hunt, Newcastle West
I REFER to Georgina Woods (Letters 6/11) regarding Stephen Galilee’s article last Friday (‘Rising demand drives a future for coal’, Newcastle Herald 2/11). There was also a recent report where the CFMMEU called for change management to oversee the progress from coal power to renewables (‘Life after Liddell’, Herald 30/10). It was good to see that the proposal called for reasoned argument for and against. As if it is something new, we must not forget to compare apples with apples, even if using oranges results in a more acceptable result, and remember that the market giveth, but also taketh away. Today's record price can disappear tomorrow.

CARL Stevenson (Letters 6/11) I live in Mayfield and I have no issues or problem with a container terminal being built here, I moved to Mayfield when it was a full blown industrial area and have no problem now so don't worry Dora creek is safe.
Colin Geatches, Mayfield
IN REPLY to Ronald Piper (Short Takes 6/11) I think Peter Fitzsimons speaks like a proud Australian. Maybe he should've said, I say old chap, have you seen the children this morning? He'd sound like a monarchist.
Peter Grant, Speers Point
IN ANSWER to Ronald Piper (Short Takes 6/11): welcome to Australia, Mr Piper. Children have been kids ever since I was a kid and for as long as most of us can remember, with no detrimental effects to the parents or their kids. Don't add to our already overdone political correctness.
Col Tagg, Fullerton Cove
TO RONALD Piper (Short Takes 6/11): I am amazed at your astonishment as to Peter Fitzsimons’ comments on ABC TV. Maybe he should have made it easier and called them tin lids .
Shane Tull, Dudley
ON MONDAY our self-confessed gay butcher had a whinge about not being referred to by the blokey Australian term mate (Short Takes 5/11). I thought he'd be happy with honey, darl or sweetie instead.
Mac Maguire, Charlestown
