East end street access partly reopened on Sunday evening, with the race circuit expected to be completely removed by Friday December 14.
"It takes about three weeks to pack it all down, but you'll see the bulk of it all going this week,” Newcastle Supercars event manager Kurt Sakzewski said.
“A lot of the barriers will disappear and around 6pm tonight, the roads around the track will go back to normal traffic mode. By December 14 everything should be clean and clear.”
Crews were on site on Watt Street on Monday morning to remove the temporary cover on the light rail track. The last-minute decision to cover the tracks was made just 24 hours prior to racing, after concerns were raised about possible damage to cars.
"Obviously that was a bit of a trial with the light rail,” he said.
“We put in place some measures to make sure it wasn't going to be an issue over the weekend and they worked really well. From what we saw it showed the rails there weren't really any impact on the drivers and certainly the cars weren't any impact on the rail either."
