NEWCASTLE’S W-League finals hopes suffered a huge blow after they conceded twice in stoppage time to lose 3-2 to Adelaide in round nine at McDonald Jones Stadium on Monday morning.
Adelaide substitute Isabel Hodgson scored the equaliser in the second minute of additional time and then crossed for Veronica Latsko to knock home the winner in the fourth.
The loss leaves Newcastle in second-last spot with seven points from seven games, while Adelaide went to second place on 15.
Neither side had mounted a serious threat before Jets forward Teigan Collister scored her debut W-League goal in the 21st minute. Collister found an open net from an acute angle with her shot after goalkeeper Sarah Willacy was caught out of position.
Half-time substitute Fanndis Fridriksdottir levelled in the 56th minute when she beat Arin Wright on the right edge of the box and hit a curling right-foot strike inside the near post.
The Jets looked to have secured three points in the 85th minute with an own goal from Wright’s cross which left-back Laura Johns headed over Willacy.
But in sweltering conditions and with centre-back Cassidy Davis off injured with a knee injury, Adelaide finished the stronger.
Latsko’s goal took her to equal top scorer in the league with eight.
