VALE Bob Hawke. One of our greatest politicians. An example of leadership pre-dating these days, where the powers that be scratch around in the gutters and sewers bringing forth the lowest common denominator. Bob Hawke was a man with vision, intelligence and a love and understanding of the people. We need such people to represent us, or we must do it ourselves.

SADLY, Australia has lost a great man. Perhaps not a true blue Labor man, more his own man, but one who always tried to improve things for Australia and its people. Of course, you can't achieve from opposition and swinging seats get preference, resulting in our area missing out on some huge contracts. I suppose how we feel about that depends on the depth of our belief. Bob Hawke, aided by a brilliant treasurer and a great team, gave Labor and the country a very successful era. Maybe a new one is dawning. RIP Bob.

WHILE there is no doubt that Bob Hawke's place in history is well deserved, and that the initiatives of his government reshaped Australia, there is equally no doubt that, had social media been around during the 1960s and '70s, he would not have become our 23rd prime minister.

COMRADES, let us reject the rusted-on Liberal view of 'we will all be ruined' if Labor wins. I think that the majority of Australians are going to look to the light this Saturday and vote for a more equitable society, a fairer society. A society that looks after those that cannot look after themselves. Simply a society that cares. The next few years are going to have complex global problems to navigate so a sensible team player is needed, a consensus politician, and one that has a passion for history. And I believe that is not the fossilised Scott Morrison.

JOHN Beach well said (Letters, 15/5), couldn't agree more, along with many other ratepayers.

I WAS sorry to hear of the passing of Bob Hawke. I had the privilege of having beer with him on a few occasions. He was a good bloke and a great prime minister. RIP mate.

CLEVER analogy, Steve Barnett (Short Takes, 16/5). Funnily enough, the other day at home, I was reminded of what the Liberals have done for rich people when the bathtub overflowed.

HIGH speed rail is the perfect solution for commuting between Sydney and Brisbane, picking up Newcastle along the way. Why not put it overhead in the middle following the highway - minimal land acquisitions and great marketing for drivers sitting in congestion. It could even continue on down to Melbourne along the Hume.
