REGARDING a new national anthem for Australia (Short Takes, 10/6): Maybe to solve all the religious and racial issues Australia could take the lead, modify and adopt John Lennon's song Imagine. Then we can show we are a truly progressive and civilised country.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people, living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people, living life in peace, you
You may say I'm an Australian
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people, sharing all the world, you
You may say I'm an Australian
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one.

JOHN Bonnyman and Mac Maguire both sledged Scott Morrison over his recent $10,000 pay rise (Short Takes, 13/6). The salaries of politicians are determined by the Parliamentary Remuneration Tribunal for the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and down to the back benchers on both sides of the House. Considering that the polls had indicated Bill Shorten was likely to be the new prime minister, I don't think that Mr Bonnyman or Mr Maguire would have made similar comments on this page if Mr Shorten had taken over the reins as the leader of this country and was subsequently awarded the same pay rise.

THANKS to Malcolm's failed "fibre to the node" strategy, my IP address changes about once per day. My mail is sometimes rejected because the address I had yesterday now belongs to a spammer. Isn't it about time that the government scrapped the NBN and implemented it properly?

JOHN Arnold (Short Takes, 10/6): I believe that if it was all about money for Israel Folau he would not have sacrificed his career and lucrative contract. His legal compensation claim is no sure thing. As for $10 million making it difficult for him to enter the kingdom of God, spare a thought for Alan Joyce, chairman of Qantas, Rugby Australia's chief sponsor. In 2017 his annual reported earnings of $24.6 million made him Australia's highest paid chief executive officer.
