IN an unprecedented landmark judgement, the Rocky Hill Coal Project at Gloucester has been denied approval because of its negative impacts on climate change. Tracey Chapman wrote that a revolution starts with a whisper. This Australian whisper will move around the governments and courts of the planet. Thank you Chief Judge Brian Preston.

ECONOMIC terrorism has infiltrated the banks and the rulers of our society. Imagine! The Liberal government has knocked back a royal commission on banks 26 times. Ah yes, the old story, capitalism is the exploitation of man by man.
Richard Ryan, Summerland Point
IMAGINE if $650 million had been spent to improve the existing rail service rather than for a disruptive, made-in-Spain vanity project, among other things. Is this what politicians mean when they say they want to run government like a business? The citizens of the Hunter have certainly had the business done on them.
Peter Ronne, Woodberry
DEAR men and women of Australia, if I could reach the ear of the nation, I would say: don't betray us again ALP, even before you are elected. Don't break our hearts. Just stand up for once, support the Urgent Medical Transfers Bill. If you don't, then you’re truly no different for NLP – except you're more deceitful.

AS London and New York build more railways into their centres, to maximise smart power and infrastructure use, Newcastle's unique blend of the natural and built has got cut off, detailed by the lord mayor in ‘United in branding Newcastle's new era’, (Newcastle Herald, 9/2). It should be "S", for shemozzle. Refer Peter Lewis' brilliant cartoon, (‘Lewis’ view’, Herald, 9/2). Take a bow lord mayor. Note, Sydney's railways, with more to come, do not interfere with its central business district.
Graeme Tychsen, Rankin Park
OH dear – more issues and problems for Newcastle's light rail (‘Mind the gap’, Herald, 8/2). What a pity we didn't follow Melbourne's lead with their trams by building in Newcastle for Newcastle by Newcastle! Trusting local expertise and pride would have had huge benefits for all.
Adrienne Roberts, Kahibah
PETER Devey (Short Takes, 11/2), power outages in NSW, January to March – 450, April to June – 320, October to December – 450; mostly due to equipment failure.
Wayne McVicar, Tarro
JOHN McLennan (Short Takes, 9/2), yes it is terrible to celebrate taking a wicket or scoring a ton. Maybe the cricketers should learn how to submit, apologise and show remorse after any kind of success.
Brad Hill, Singleton
