The road, which had been closed in westbound lanes, reopened around 6.10pm.
Six fire crews arrived on the scene near Anderson Drive just after midday where they found the truck, which had been carrying building waste, was well alight.
Flames could be seen coming from the wheels of the truck, burning near two full tanks of diesel, a spokesperson for NSW Fire and Rescue said. The driver was alerted to the flames and managed to safely exit the vehicle.
Emergency crews remained on the scene at around 3pm, where all westbound lanes were closed, and drivers were diverted via John Renshaw Drive and Weakleys Drive.
In a separate incident around 10.20am, emergency services were called to East Maitland to clean up an oil spill stretching around two kilometres along the New England Highway near Melbourne Street.
One eastbound lane was closed as a result of the spill, but westbound traffic was unaffected.
