Adam Anthony Bortic, 32, is accused of killing two workmates – Queensland man Jamie Ward, 34, and 29-year-old Estonian national Lauri Juerman – after his Mazda 3 slammed into a tree off Soldiers Point Road about 1am on April 13.
Mr Bortic was represented by solicitor Christian Hearn when he appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday charged with a number of serious driving offences, including two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, which carry a maximum of 14 years in jail.
Mr Hearn asked for a four-week adjournment to get a final expert report, despite the DPP noting they had been ready to commit the matter since early December.
A fiery Magistrate Robert Stone said he "wasn't happy", but ultimately granted the adjournment application.
“You can have your month but that is all you’re getting.”
