A new suburb sale record for a non-development site in Mayfield was set last month but has already been exceeded by the $1.18 million purchase of a historic residence.

The grand Victorian home at 15 Kerr Street, known as Winnonaville, was built in 1878 for the Winn family, who established Winn’s Department Store in Newcastle’s Hunter Street.
It later had another well-known owner in Dr Colin Glass, who set up the Mayfield Pharmacy of Soul Pattinson in 1936.
The five-bedroom home was positioned on a flat block nearly 1000 square metres in size with access off both Kerr Street and Crebert Street.
It had lacework verandahs, French doors, high ceilings with ornate features, leadlight glass, archways plus timber floors and staircase. There were also self-contained guest quarters.

It was marketed by Jason Maxwell and Patrick Collins from Raine and Horne Newcastle and attracted multiple offers before being secured by a Sydney buyer.
It surpassed the $1.145 million result for a renovated 1910 residence at 55 Carrington Street on January 24 and came after the $960,000 sale before Christmas of a 1920s home that had been renovated at 68 Bull Street in Mayfield.
“We have multiple offers along the way,” Mr Maxwell said. “We probably had three serious buyers and someone from Sydney won out.
“The market is slower. There’s certainly less buyers in the marketplace than we saw three months ago but, having said that, I’m finding that buyers who are in the marketplace are serious.”
Local interest also came for the admired property.
