DIANA Taaffe asked: "What can we do to make those at the top listen?" (Letters, 18/6) in relation to the closure of the Stockton and similar "health" centres. I ask the same question, as the feeling is that such centres have done a good job in helping the residents in minimising their problem and should not be closing. This will be followed up with a letter to my state member.

IT seems Cr Kevin Baker is getting worked up about the artwork on the corner of Main Road and Stockland Drive; he even wants to start a petition ('$265k to replace pink wall', Newcastle Herald, 18/6). Well done Cr Baker; some great action take on a really minor issue. I don't seem to recall any petitions on the issue of the Pennant Street bridge, the inaction and shortfall of funding thanks to the State Liberal government. How about we start with the big issues and worry about the little ones later on?

THE Cambodian refugee deal was another one of this government's major achievements; one or two refugees resettled there at a cost of $55 million.

REGARDING the pink wall ('$265k to replace pink wall', Newcastle Herald, 18/6): I'm interested how the council heard there were no "formal complaints" made about the pink wall at Glendale. My aged parents live in one of the homes with a pink wall at the rear of their property. They had numerous discussions with different levels of council before and after the painting. I understand two members of our family have separately, personally-addressed responses from the mayor in relation to complaints regarding the wall. How is that not "formal"?

LOVERS of "the greatest game of all", National Rugby League are entitled to question the standard of refereeing in first grade NRL after rounds 13 and 14. I understand the general manager of elite refereeing, Graham Annesley, has publicly-admitted on nrl.com that poor judgement or errors by Adam Gee and Ben Cummins have cost the North Queensland Cowboys their past two matches. Urgh.

MAC (Short Takes, 18/6 ) - you're forgetting the three worst PMs we have ever had: Keating, Rudd and Gillard. All Labor. We need to have Liberal governments to get us out the mess left by Labor PMs. Yes Hawke was good, but look at what followed him. Thank goodness we got rid of Shorten before he left the country in turmoil.

IT'S interesting to note that Coles is cutting jobs. I'm assuming all those people using the self checkout register don't really care about employment for the young ones these days. Technology is costing us big time.
