The awards acknowledge the local and international success of gymnasts, coaches and officials within NSW.
Chailend trains out of the Blackert Gymnastics Academy at Gateshead.
She had a huge year in 2018 placing first all around at the state championships and then had a highly successful Australian championships being crowned the 2018 national champion in level eight senior.
Chailend also placed first on floor and beam and second on vault at the Australian championships.
NSW Gymnastics was also celebrating registering more than 72,000 athletes, marking the fifteenth consecutive year of membership growth.
“2018 saw us build upon success in previous years to claim a remarkable number of national and international medals across all six gym sports,” Gymnastics NSW CEO Aaron Bloomfield said.
“On our 70th anniversary this year, Gymnastics NSW also celebrates NSW continuing to be the leading state in athlete registration, innovation and technical membership of coaches and judges.”
HUNTER ACADEMY
Eight boys and three girls from the Hunter Academy of Sport were among a full field of 128 junior golfers participating in the first Jack Newton Junior Golf Masters for 2019 at the weekend in Wagga Wagga.
Former Hunter Academy of Sport athletes Josh Robards and Harry Cleare attended the tournament alongside current athletes Brij Ingrey, Harry Atkinson, Ethan Van Zyl, Taj Vesper, Owen Evans, Max Stone, Quedesha Golledge, Jasmine Vesper and Kaitlyn Van Zyl.
It was a great weekend for the region’s junior golfers with the following results with former HAS athlete Joshua Robards (Newcastle) coming from behind to win the Boys Championship.
Rounds of 71/69 saw Josh claw back the overnight deficit of four shots from Castle Hill’s Rip Singh.
Josh was still one behind with one hole to play, the Par 3 18th, where he made a great par while Rip made a disappointing double bogey to hand Josh the one shot victory.
The victory books Josh into the season-ending Champions Trophy at Bonville and will will surely raise his name in the upcoming junior state team selection period.
Fellow Hunter Academy of Sport athlete Brij Ingrey (Newcastle) had his best Jack Newton Junior Golf Masters tournament result to date firing rounds of 76 (+4) and 71 (-1) to finish equal 6th.
Teammates Harry Cleare (Nelson Bay) finished T8 with rounds of 73/75 and Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri) finished T11 overall and took out the 12/13 Years Division.
In the girls, HAS squad member Quedesha Golledge (Kew) had her first Jack Newton Junior Golf age victory with rounds of 81/81 to finish sixth overall, confirming her position in the Champions Trophy as well.
Singleton’s Jasmine Vesper finished credible 17th following rounds of 86/86.
