McLean injured her knee in the first quarter of the Hunters' 75-48 victory over reigning champions Norths Bears on Saturday night and scans confirmed the guard had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.
The 19-year-old, who had returned to Newcastle after playing for Bendigo Spirit in the recently completed Women’s National Basketball League, has begun physiotherapy in preparation for the likelihood of surgery and at least six months on the sideline.
Though devastated by the injury, the Hunters juniors remains positive and is confident of a full recovery.
The shooting guard was fouled while attempting a lay-up and fell to the floor clutching her right knee late in the first quarter on Saturday.
Play was stopped for about five minutes while she received medical attention and was assisted from the court.
The Hunters are away to Penrith in round two on Saturday.
