Shadow Minister for Education Jihad Dib and Port Stephens MP Kate Washington visited the school on Wednesday to announce the funding for the project, which Ms Washington said would be designed and delivered in consultation with the school community.
“I noticed the first time I went to their end of year school assemblies that there were mums with bubs on their hips peering in and trying to hear what was happening,” Ms Washington said.
“It did not suit the school community, which had grown out of the existing facilities.
“They have to have stagger their school assemblies - the hall fits about 150 students and the school has 400 students plus.”
Ms Washington said if schools weren’t able to share their successes together, they were “not achieving all you could be”.
“This new hall will bring the school community together once again,” she said.
“It means parents will be able to celebrate special occasions with their children instead of crowding around the back doors trying to get a glimpse of their child.”
The announcement comes after Labor’s $7.4 commitment to new schools and school upgrades.
