Inquiries are continuing but police believe the woman might have stopped at the top of her driveway then got out of the vehicle to check her letterbox.
The police investigation will attempt to determine if the car's hand-brake was faulty. Whatever the reason, the unoccupied vehicle rolled down the driveway and hit the woman. She was dragged about five metres along the ground as the car crashed through a fence.
The accident occured about 5.15pm in Aldyth Street, a steep road near Blackbutt Reserve. Ambulance paramedics treated the woman for numerous injuries, including a broken pelvis, fractured ribs and severe lacerations to a lower leg.
She was taken to nearby John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
