The team from Carter Heavy Haulage was extremely honoured to take out the Best WHS Management System (SME) category at the 2019 Hunter Safety Awards.
Carter Heavy Haulage has invested heavily and worked extremely hard to ensure that it not only meets its obligations under WHS but exceeds its obligations and also goes the extra mile to ensure the safety, health and welfare of every member of its team, its clients and the general public
"It is testament to the efforts of the whole team here at Carter Heavy Haulage and we are so proud of this achievement," company secretary Leonie Carter said.
Mrs Carter said public perception of the transport industry is not always good. This generally stems from lack of knowledge and understanding of the operation of the industry and the significant hazards and risks faced by those within the industry on a daily basis.
To try and improve the public perception of the industry and improve the knowledge and understanding of the daily safety issues faced by the industry, the Newcastle Hunter Road Transport Awareness Group holds an annual Transport Awareness Day.
"Our company Directors and Safety and Compliance Manager hold positions on the Transport Awareness Group Executive Committee and actively participate in the coordination of the annual event," Mrs Carter said.
"This includes coordinating the participation of other transport companies and government and industry regulators such as the Roads and Maritime Service and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator who set up displays and conduct information sessions which highlight the safety issues faced by the industry.
"We strive to ensure that the day is both entertaining and informative for industry members and the general public and try to make it a fun filled family orientated day."
Carter Heavy Haulage is also an active member of the Hunter Freight Group, which consists of transport industry organisations and regulatory bodies who have an integral role in the development, management and use of the road networks throughout the Hunter Region.
"On a smaller scale and closer to home, we are about to hold safety information presentation sessions for our contractors to ensure that they not only understand the legislative and regulative requirements to operate in the industry but also to assist them in becoming and staying compliant," Mrs Carter said.
When asked if Carter Heavy Haulage will be back again next year, Mrs Carter replied: "Really, need you ask? Of course we will be and we will be striving for an even higher honour, that of taking home the prestigious 'gold' helmet - WHS Business of the Year."
