NSW Transport Management Centre advised drivers of the closure around 6.15am, amid busy traffic conditions causing queues around five kilometres near the Hawkesbury River Bridge.
The road was re-opened around 6.50am, but heavy traffic conditions were expected around the scene for some time.
Traffic is queued on the main deck of the bridge around nine kilometres, a spokesperson for the Transport Management Centre said.
Motorists have been advised to allow plenty of extra travel time until traffic returns to normal peak.
All emergency services and traffic response crews have also left the scene of the crash.
In a separate incident, emergency services were called to Whittingham west of Branxton on Wednesday morning after reports of a two vehicle crash.
One of two westbound lanes have been closed on the New England Highway, approaching the Golden Highway, as a result of the crash.
Drivers have been advised to allow extra time and to travel cautiously.
