"The image of the cross standing in the ashes left from the fire was so powerful. It said to the world that hope is not lost," Dean Bowyer told the packed Christ Church Cathedral.
She urged the congregation to spread the message of hope in their daily lives.
"We live in a world of instant messaging and news," she said.
"We don't have to wait for the good news to spread like the first disciples did. We can be part of the new world and spread the message of hope."
Easter church attendances at the cathedral and other churches remained strong.
"They have been really encouraging. We had more coming to the Good Friday services, our family service in particular was about double from what it was last year," Dean Bowyer said
"It's been wonderful this morning and we have another three to go."
