Paramedics were called to a unit at Bull Street in Mayfield about 1.20pm on Easter Monday, treating a male patient.
He was assessed at the scene before they decided to transport him to the Mater. One paramedic drove while the other stayed in the back with the patient.
Police allege the patient became abusive to the paramedic riding in the back with him.
While the driver pulled over to assist, it is alleged the patient struck the other paramedic in her ribs and knocked her over inside the vehicle.
The paramedic managed to get to her feet and open the door of the ambulance to get out. Police allege the patient followed her, continuing to abuse her verbally as he walked away.
Both paramedics reported the matter to police, who attended a Bull Street property and arrested the man.
He was taken to Newcastle police station and charged with obstruct or hinder ambulance officer by act of violence.
The 32-year-old received conditional bail to face court again on May 16.
