The 27-year-old struggled to lease a unit in inner-Sydney with his girlfriend, largely because as first-time renters they had no rental history to show. They got the lease but when vacating the property were accused of not cleaning it professionally. They took their case to Fair Work tribunal and won.
Mr Stojcevski is passionate about helping renters to the extent that he launched The Renters Agent in early 2018. While home buyer agents are not a new concept, he believes his business is unique in the Hunter.
"I help tenants to find rental properties, working as their personal agent. The thing that sets me apart from all other agents is that I work solely for the tenants, they are my number one priority," he says. "I also work with all the agents and have access to all the properties available both on and off the market."
Raised in Sydney, Mr Stojcevski began an arts degree before completing a business diploma then dropping out of a business degree. "I'm a people person, not a university person," he says simply.
Work experience with a Sydney property agent led him to his passion in leasing.
"People are so grateful that you are finding them a home. I was always an emotional transaction person, it wasn't about the top dollar."
Mr Stojcevski's journey to business owner started three years ago, when he left Sydney and arrived in Newcastle to try his luck. He worked at Property Solutions 101 and was mentored by its property management owner Justin Bunts before moving to Green Street Property, where property management director Iolanda Gow helped him develop his business.
"I wouldn't be self-employed if not for her," he says.
The Renters Agent helps first-time renters, those relocating, those struggling to get approved for properties (including pet owners) and homeowners who have sold to downsize or renovating and need short-term digs. He also assists companies find homes for staff.
Mr Stojcevski charges a flat fee to renters and the first week's rent for company clients. He has exceeded turnover expectations and plans to expand nationally.
