A MOTORCYCLE rider suffered head, chest and spinal injuries after his bike was reportedly hit by a truck on the Hunter Expressway.

The crash occurred about 7pm Sunday and closed all Newcastle-bound lanes of the expressway at Greta.
Emergency services were called to the scene and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported the 37-year-old man to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Motorists were diverted via the New England Highway to rejoin the Hunter Expressway at Heddon Greta while the crash investigation unit and Roads and Maritime Services cleared the scene.
Police will now investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
