The car crash closed the Pacific Highway near Avonlea Street just before 7.30am, reopening to traffic just after 1pm.
It is understood a Ford Falcon travelling southbound and a Mitsubishi Colt travelling northbound collided.
The 50-year-old female driver of the Mitsubishi died at the scene. The female driver of the Ford Falcon, believed to be aged in her mid-30s, was trapped by compression inside the vehicle. Once released she was taken by ambulance to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Emergency services including the police crash investigation unit and Roads and Maritime remained on site for almost six hours.
A contra flow was put in place for northbound motorists, while southbound drivers were sent via a diversion. The highway has since reopened to traffic.
