The court heard the Crown could call as many as 28 witnesses during the trial.
The former dean, who was defrocked in 2012, was arrested in 2017 following a referral from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Mr Lawrence previously denied child sex allegations during the royal commission's hearing in Newcastle.
He was charged in 2017 with aggravated indecent assault on a victim under the age of 16 and aggravated sexual assault.
