It is understood a Ford Falcon travelling southbound and a Mitsubishi Colt travelling northbound collided on the Pacific Highway near Avonlea Street early on Monday morning.
A 50-year-old female driver died at the scene, and the second driver - a woman believed to be aged in her 30s - is still in a critical condition in intensive care at John Hunter Hospital.
Emergency services, including the police crash investigation unit and Roads and Maritime, remained on site for almost six hours.
The Pacific Highway reopened to traffic just after 1pm.
