Emergency services were called to the accident about 1.30am.
The truck had rolled over at the intersection of Newcastle Road and Blue Gum Road.
Paramedics treated the driver at the scene, before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
Two of three westbound lanes of Newcastle Road were closed to traffic for several hours on Wednesday.
The lanes were expected to stay closed until at least 8am due to the difficulty in recovering the vehicle, but it was closer to 9.30am by the time the site was cleared. Roads and Maritime Services, council, a heavy vehicle tow truck and a crane were all working on scene on Wednesday morning.
Newcastle Road has now full reopened to traffic.
