Some Newcastle and Hunter school students were midway through the latest round of tests when they lost connectivity, while others were unable to login to the test at all.
"We believe it's time to have a comprehensive review of NAPLAN and that is also in terms of the way it is delivered," Australian Education Union president Correna Haythorpe said on Wednesday.
Valentine Public School students were among those impacted by the online issues and the school released this statement to parents on Tuesday evening:
"As you are aware, today was the first day of NAPLAN, which our school is doing online. Unfortunately some connectivity issues were experienced during some of the tests and these issues have been reported to the NAPLAN NESA Team and are currently being investigated.
"While this isn't ideal, please be assured we have procedures to follow to minimise any impacts on our students.
"National test authorities have advised us they regret any inconvenience this has caused to schools and students, and are working to rectify the issue as soon as possible.
Connectivity problems were experienced across the country and are understood to be linked to the NAPLAN national firewall.

NAPLAN results for each school are published on the My School website, that helps parents and educators assess the performance of schools.
