Make sure you're getting the best out of the NDIS

WHEN the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was introduced in 2013, it was one of the most fundamental reforms in our history.

It aimed to help empower people with disabilities to have choice and control around their support services. Today, more than a quarter of a million Australians receive support through it.

However, the NDIS is also a sprawling bureaucracy which can be hard for average people to navigate. As such, every year, a large number of Australians are being under served.

Hunter Care Group was established to ensure local people with disabilities and psychosocial illness could take full advantage of the scheme.

What started out as a small venture by the CEO, Jarrod Burns, has developed into a leading organisation in the Hunter.

Hunter Care Group have been nominated for a stack of small business awards and have developed their own revolutionary reporting and Case Management platform, which ensures nothing "slips through the cracks".

"If you have a family member that has a disability and they obtain an NDIS Plan, sometimes you're thrown in the deep end," Operations Manager Mathew McKeown explained.

"You might be allocated a Coordinator who can link in supports and utilise your NDIS Plan to its potential. However, without a trained Coordinator, supports are being allocated to online platforms where the personalisation of caring for people and quality assurance is limited."

Participants and families are often losing out when their NDIS Plan is reviewed, due to insufficient documentation. This results in participants' plans being trimmed back and allocated funding for support services getting significantly reduced.

"This is why Hunter Care Groups funds a Case Management platform, guaranteeing quality assurance. As we are not an online support model, we have the ability to ensure every participant we support, has direct access to their own Case Manager," Mr Burns added.

"The Case Manager supervises and trains support workers, reviews shift notes and ensure NDIS funded goals are worked toward and documented articulately. Overall, this heavily supports participants in their plan reviews.

"We also provide Support Workers. Our case management team take on referrals, where we can deliver specific Support Workers, tailored to our clients' individual needs... and help build capacity.

"We can also provide Support Coordination, so if you get an NDIS plan that requires Coordination, we will link you in to the most appropriate services and our trained Coordinators will assist on an ongoing basis."
