Port Stephens man Chris Rundle, 35, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital after Billy Smith shot him at a property at Bingleburra, 20km west of Dungog, about midday on Sunday.
Mr Smith, 28, suffered a gunshot wound to the head - believed to be self-inflicted - after Mr Rundle was shot.
Mr Smith died in hospital from his injury on Tuesday, police confirmed earlier this week.
Both men had been attending a family gathering at a Bingleburra Road property when the incident occurred.
Emergency crews found Mr Rundle at the property, while Mr Smith was discovered nearby.
Hunter New England Health confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Mr Rundle remained in John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Port Stephens-Hunter police are continuing their investigation into the incident and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
